Beignets (Closed)

RestaurantsSpokane

Beignets has only been open for a weekend, so consider this our "first impression". Luckily that impressions is positive enough that we think you should give it a try, even this early on.

The owner has described Beignets as both "European" and as a spot where you can escape Spokane for a while. The former is something we tend to find a bit vague as far as a restaurant descriptions go -- Europe is a big continent -- but credit where credit is due. Here it seems appropriate, with a decor and menu that would probably fall under what commonly is described as "continental" in many European countries. Think of that as a wide, catch-all phrase for a French base with a mix of of other European facets.

In that sense "European" might just be an appropriate description.

As for the "escapism" part, we'd say that's prettyma spot on too. The vibe is definitely a bit different from not only most Spokane spots, but also from what we're used to in the greater Northwest. The interiors are largely black and white, with pops of red, and videos from various European cities are projected onto a wall. It all looks great.

Of course the food is the most important aspect of a restaurant, but as many of us dine out for a larger experience, stuff like this matters.

Plus, the food was good during our visit. The cevapcici crepe was just a little bit different from what we had expected to see here: Think a crepe stuffed with tightly packed ground meat, almost meatball like, seasoned, and topped with an egg. In a sense this dish is eponymous with the "European" description. It's a mix of the French crepe and the Eastern European cevapcici, and the mix worked well for us.

The more standard blueberry mascarpone crepe was very good too. Not too sweet, thanks to the mascarpone creme, and with a nice citric finish to it. Definitely a good breakfast dish for those wanting something fresh to kick off the day.

There are other menu items that aren't crepes here too, but calling Beignets a creperie is appropriate. (Though grab a handful of actual beignets too -- they make for a good starter.)

Really, there wasn't a whole lot to complain about here. The coffee -- beans provided by neighboring Thomas Hammer -- seemed a bit sour, and our waitress, while very friendly, was overly chatty. We can live with that, particularly if they can get the coffee figured out.

Overall this was a positive experience for us. Good food in a nice setting... We have no hesitations recommending anyone to give Beignets a try. Now we only hope they can keep the consistency up.

Those #SpoBREW2 teams. Part II

SpoBREWSpokane

#SpoBREW2 is chugging along, and August 25th is getting pretty dang close.

For those who need a reminder, this is the follow up to last year's #SpoBREW, our homebrewing contest. You can read more about last year's hoopla in our three page wrap-up post.

Now back to the teams. The first batch was revealed, and so here is the second group...

Berenstain Beers: The judges's winner from last year has had quite the shake up, with Brad tossing out Joel from the team, quite probably screaming "you're dead to me!" at the same time. Will he be able to repeat last year's success without his partner in crime, and (alleged) bribery? We shall see... We shall see. It is questionable considering he will have to face...

: The glorious Team SpoCOOL has teamed up with Joel, because, frankly, we like to join forces with a winner. (Our beer did not win last year, likely because its rich originality was so very mind blowing.) We also found the name ‽ -- interrobang -- more pretentious than &. And in the end it's all about beating Erick Doxey.

Team Border War: From the deep bowels of... some states the rest of the world has forgotten about... Team Border War is making a comeback after placing #5 with the judges and #15 with the brewers last year. Can they repeat this incredible inconsistency this year? And will there once again be peace between whatever the two states at war are? (We think it's probably Alabama and Georgia.)

Sepmachine: The man can make a mean pizza at Veraci, and is once again back here in #SpoBREW2. Already the recipient of the coveted SpoCOOL's Best Pizza award two years running, his aim is now squarely set at making the best beer. His credentials definitely make him a contender.

The Pretty Little Liars Drinking Game

Movies, Music, and TVSpokane

The Pretty Little Liars Drinking Game cover

It's a little bit Veronica Mars, a little bit Twin Peaks, and about as addictive as crack-cocaine. I'm talking, of course, about ABC Family's murder mystery, Pretty Little Liars.

A roller coaster of a show it is, and what better way to enjoy it than by partaking in a drinking game?

Take a drink...

... whenever somebody tells a lie.

... an actor who used to star on Melrose Place shows up. (That'll almost guarantee you two shots per episode, through Laura Leighton and Chad Lowe.)

... whenever "A" sends a text message.

... whenever a song by The Pierces is played. (Guaranteed to happen once, during the intro sequence.)

... an actor portraying a high-school student clearly is older than the character he or she is playing.

... for every inappropriate relationship scene. (Student/teacher, etc.)

... whenever you wonder when ABC Family became so edgy. (Teachers hooking up with students?! Girl on girl make-out scenes?! People are murdered on ABC Family?!)

... for every Twin Peaks reference. (FBI Agent Cooper, etc.)

... whenever the girls discover they suspected the wrong person of being "A". Take an additional shot if you thought the suspect was "A" too.

... whenever "A" (seemingly) helps the girl.

... for every fake TV clone of Facebook, Twitter, etc. shown on screen.

Two seasons are available for streaming on Netflix, with season three is currently airing on TV. Make tonight a Pretty Little Liars night!

Notes from all over, openings and closings

#SpoCOOLSpokane

El Mercado del Pueblo, the Mexican market/deli turned deli/market, closed a few weeks ago. Too bad, it started off so well too.

Beignets, meanwhile, is set to open in less than two weeks. We don't like directing people to Facebook, but what the hell, jump over to Beignets's page. Interiors and food are looking promising.

The Viking, like we mentioned on the Twitter, is set to re-open under new management.

The city is selling Anthony's building according to the S-R, so... Yeah, looks like Anthony's will be kicked out, unless they end up buying the joint.

Bowl'z Bitez and Spiritz opened lazt week, downtown. We're zure it'z zuper!
