Deschutes Jubelale 2011

Deschutes Jubelale 2011 cover

We're still in September with temperatures in the nineties, yet here we have our first winter seasonal, Deschutes Jubelale. It makes little sense. First day of fall literally just hit; we should not see this beer for at least another month. At least. I have no clue why they released it this early, and I frankly find it ridiculous.

Yet here it is, and my instinct is to rip the beer apart -- you just don't release a winter seasonal this early -- and I would have, had it not been for this being the best Jubelale in years.

Oh, it's unseasonal, don't get me wrong. For most this will be a better fit about a month from now, but there's no denying this is a rather brilliant ale.

It pours a very deep amber-ish ruby -- or, indeed, ruby-ish amber -- color with a foamy head. Retention and lacing is very decent.

Smell -- it's like Santa came jumping out and smacked your face with Christmas, which is especially disturbing in September. There are spices and malts galore here, backed up by a gentle sweetness.

The flavor is round, almost hearty. Again, this literally screams winter (oh, I heard something). The malts cover every inch of the mouth in tandem with the subtle hops, and the tongue is gently massaged by spices. Hints of caramel are there to let you know everything will be OK.

This is a damn good beer, there's absolutely no doubt about that. The balance is nigh perfect and the flavors are captured in a wonderful vaguely creamy consistency.

Either way, I find it completely ridiculous that Deschutes released it this early. It makes no sense.

Buy it a month from now, by all means, there is no reason not to. Right now, though, I'd look toward the short-running autumn ales instead. No need to celebrate winter too early; it'll be all around us soon enough.

SpoBREW 2.0 is a go

SpoBREWSpokane

Holy crap, it is happening -- SpoBREWING for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is a go, and this time you get to enjoy the fruits of the homebrewing labors.

What? Eight teams will present some of their best homebrews for your tasting pleasure!

When? Saturday, October 8th, 3pm.

Where? Manito Tap House.

How can I access the tasting?! A donation of $10 (or more!) to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation will grant you access to the inner circle where the tasting will occur, plus you will get your very own 2oz tasting glass. And if that's not enough, Big Sky Brewing is throwing in a beer, too, for your enjoyment. You can donate at the door or online, like, right now. Plus, you can feel good about yourself for supporting a great cause.

We're feeling extremely optimistic about this second itteration of SpoBREW, particularly after the success of the first one. Hosting this one at the Manito Tap House means you can sample their food as well as their fifty taps of beer as well. (50!)

And there's more: Savor Sweets will have a special lollipop on sale for the event!

In other words, this will be a can't-miss event if you like beer, good food, candy, and want to support a great cause. Access to the tasting part will be limited, so you should probably run and donate $10 right now!

Casa de Oro

Casa de Oro cover

Let's talk Casa de Oro, because why not? I mean, OK, there are plenty of reasons not to talk about it, and even more reasons not to eat there, but then the latter might be a reason to talk about it anyway.

OK? OK!

I find Casa de Oro somewhat offensive not necessarily because it's awfully bad -- it's no Fiesta Mexicana -- it's just awfully dull.

Take the fajitas, for example. This is a dish I tend to steer clear of at Mexican restaurants, but as Casa de Oro so proudly displays them on the menu... Hey, how bad could they be?

And again, they aren't that bad, they're just not that good either. They come as sizzling hot as they're advertised, and that's all well and good, but they're also terribly under seasoned. I mean, sauté up some chicken at home with taco powder from Safeway and you'll have more flavor than this.

The guacamole follows suit -- good guacamole should be fresh tasting, but the avocados here felt they were a day too old. And frankly, sour cream... It's well and fine when you make a few quick tacos at home, but I really do feel a restaurant could do something a bit more exciting than that.

So on, so forth. I mean, you get it. Casa de Oro is like the many many faceless Mexican restaurants in town, the ones that don't really try too hard and frankly seem more Mexican-ish than the genuine product.

I doubt we'll be back, unless we really have to. Life is too short for dull.
